Natural Weakening of Teeth

As hard as teeth are, as we age our teeth become more and more brittle. A good example of this would be taking a look at the craze lines that form in the teeth of the elderly. However, teeth don't have to have obvious craze lines to be considered brittle. Many times a cusp or two of a tooth will develop a weak spot or fault line underneath. These teeth tend to become sensitive but show no signs of the cause. That is, if the tooth is filled, the filling usually looks fine and there is no decay. However, one day when biting or chewing, a corner or two will break off, usually at the gum line. In these instances, except for some sensitivity to cold (after the break) your tooth may actually feel better. Call us as soon as possible since your tooth will need to be restored to its original shape. Depending on the size of the missing piece, your tooth will need either a filling or a crown or both.
