FLOSS

Most cavities and periodontal disease begin between the teeth. While brushing is important, the bristles do not reach far enough to remove the plaque in between the teeth. That's why we recommend flossing at least once a day. Wrap 18” of floss around your middle fingers and pinch the floss between your thumb and index finger. Guide the floss in between your teeth in an up and down motion along each side of the tooth. Curve the floss like a “C” around each tooth and be sure to take it up underneath your gums as far as you can. This removes the plaque and bacteria that is hiding underneath the gums and in between the teeth. If you have problems with the floss shredding, let us know, this may be a sign of a problem with the tooth. If you have trouble reaching the back teeth you can use a floss reacher or floss fork (you can find these in the dental aisle of your store).

BRUSH

Brush with a soft bristle toothbrush. Firmer bristles can cause surface abrasions.Use fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is the most important ingredient in toothpaste. Your teeth need it in order to be strong.

Be sure to angle the bristles at a 45° angle to the tooth in order to remove the plaque along the gum line. Brush in an up and down motion or circular stroke, never back and forth (this can cause gum recession and tooth abrasion) and gently massage the gums as you go. Brush for a full two minutes in the morning, after breakfast, and at night, before you go to bed.

GUM DISEASE

As your healthcare provider, we are committed to helping you maintain a healthy mouth and body. Your gums are the foundation of your teeth and need to be in proper health to maintain your smile. Periodontal disease is the number one reason of adult tooth loss and is linked to increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, respiratory disease, complications with diabetes, complications with pregnancy and birth weight, and more. At your cleanings we will thoroughly evaluate the health of your gums and review the proper treatment for your individual needs. Frequent cleanings and exams along with proper home care is the key to maintaining healthy gums and preventing tooth loss and other risk factors.
